Designing your first or second model railway

This document is intended to help you design a good looking, well operating, layout, using the same resources (time, space and money) that would often result in a "toy like" layout. If you're planning on filling a basement, you may find something of use here, but if you are, you're probably either very experienced, have better qualified help than I can ever be, or need to rethink what you want to do in the beginning of your first layout. Even if you are planning a layout in the range I'm thinking of, you don't have to follow my advice at all. (If you should think I'm wrong, please tell me about it.)

Individuals ask for numerous questions. Some of the questions are listed below and will take you to the different answers that we have come up with.

What type of railway and how large should it be?
Which type of layout?
What are the main categories of main lines?
What about destinations and industries?
How many locomotives and cars should I have?
